Through
Abila, choreographer Opiyo Okach, in the vein of an African
griot who renews the course of history each time, improvises
and recreates the world of the nomadic people of Eastern Africa.
He recreates their mythology of stones
The dance
is extremely delicate and cool
It gives an impression
of large space. Abila is as much a universally-oriented meeting
as a re-appropriation in the urban world of the material commonly
used by most of the peoples of Eastern Africa that has a meaning
in offering rites, rites of passage, initiation rites, etc.
One would
willingly acknowledge that Opiyo has the talent to take space
in his hand, to rock it
his elbows, shoulders disappear
when he creates a world without apparent violence (J.L.Perrier.).
One could compare this performance to Butoh in the way time
stretches, but the show is very zen, and any attempt at classifying
it will ultimately fail.
